Jan 5th 2015, Happy New Year from Daniel

Greetings from Tenerife!! I hope you had a lovely Christmas and that you will have a very Happy New Year. Our Christmas certainly was different this year as it was our first year without my mother.  Even though she wasn’t there she was never far from all of our minds and we talked about her often.

Christmas Eve was very busy. In the morning I went to Letterkenny to take part in Highland Radio’s annual Christmas Eve show with Shaun Doherty. Then it was back to Dungloe to sing with the Burtonport Variety Group, who raise money for charity every year by singing Carols. As always, I  joined the choir in our local church for midnight mass There really is something very special about this service for me. After mass, as we have done for many years,we went back to my sister Kathleen’s house for homemade soup. It was then that my mother’s presence was really missed as she was always sitting in the corner waiting to greet us all as we returned from mass.

When we got back to our own house Majella, Michael, Siobhan and Siobhan’s boyfriend Gavin opened presents from underneath the Christmas tree. We got a great surprise and were delighted to be present when Gavin proposed to Siobhan. Thankfully for Gavin she said Yes!! There was tears and laughter all around.

Christmas Day we went back to Kathleen’s house for dinner and it was especially nice this year to have a lot of people around. The rest of Christmas was spent as usual eating too much and watching television. I got to see my favourite movie twice and watched it in its entirety “The Sound of Music” and I love it now as much as ever.

On last writing to you I was still in Branson. Our shows finished up very well and the highlight came for me on our last night there when I got to see Loretta Lynn. She looked and sounded better than ever. And of course I was thrilled when she asked me to join her on stage to sing a song.

Our concerts finished up in Niagara falls on the 7th & 8th of December.  We’ve taken part in a festival there for many years now and as always we enjoyed it very much.

Before coming to Tenerife on the 28th of December I got to sing at the dance I told you about in the last update. It was a great night and certainly brought me back to those days when I travelled the length and breadth of Ireland and the UK singing in the dance halls. We came to Tenerife on the 30th of December and I will be here until the 30th of January when I will go back home to get ready to go on the Caribbean cruise, which I am really looking forward to.

As you may have seen in one of Trish’s updates Majella’s book won The Bord Gais Energy Book Award. She was absolutely delighted and thanks to everyone who voted for her. We had a wonderful night at the award ceremony and it was nice for me to sit on the sidelines for a change.

Well that’s it for now, take care until the next time.
